ShopGrok founder Aaron Cowper recently sat down with the team at Snowflake to put together this case study about how Snowflake has helped ShopGrok scale.

As a bootstrapped business targeting profitable, organic growth, ShopGrok opted to limit the growth of its team size to match its revenue growth rate, and to focus on automation within its technology stack and data infrastructure to achieve maximum cost efficiency. To manage data, the business relied initially on a SQL Server database running in Azure. However, ShopGrok’s data soon exceeded the volumes manageable in single tables and schemas. ShopGrok needed to improve its scalability while reducing time spent on database administration and maintenance. We also wanted to consolidate data from all customers, segments, and markets into a single source of truth.

ShopGrok’s market evaluation concluded that Snowflake’s Cloud Data Warehousing platform best met its needs. “We found Snowflake’s user-friendly interface and continuous data ingestion through Snowpipes ideal for our requirements, while its consumption-based pricing model would help us scale up incrementally,” Cowper said. The business was able to migrate existing customers across to a data schema that could be reused for new customers. ShopGrok is now running instances of Snowflake cross-cloud on Azure, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud to support the environments of various customers. About 1,000 people across 40 customers access data through Snowflake, ranging from five to about 200 users per customer.
